Bible Definition of "Bottomless Pit"
The original word translated "Bottomless Pit" in Revelation is the Greek word, "Abussos," literally translated "Abyss." In the Old Testament, the word for Abyss, is "Tehhome." The King James Scholars usually translated both Abussos and Tehhome as, "the deep." In Revelation, however, they translate Abusso as"Bottomless Pit" instead of Abyss.
Bottomless Pit is a good and fitting translation, however, because several times in Scripture the word "pit" is used to describe Satan’s imprisonment. If we examine all uses of Abussos and Tehhome it'll be clear where Satan’s Bottomless Pit will be located. Starting with Genesis, let's look at relevant passages using "Abussos" and "Tehhome."
Since "Tehhome," Abussos," and the "Deep" are interchangeable words in the King James Bible, the verse could be read, "The earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the Bottomless Pit."
"In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life… the same day were all the fountains of the great deep (Tehhome) (abyss) broken up and the windows of heaven were opened" (Gen.7:11).
"The waters are hidden as with a stone, and the face of the deep (tehhome) (abyss) is frozen" (Job38:30).
Job saw the "face of the Bottomless Pit frozen." Was Job given a prophetic glimpse of Satan’s Bottomless Pit during the Millennium? If there's no sun, Earth will freeze almost immediately.
"He (Leviathan) (Satan) maketh the deep to boil like a pot; he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment. He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep (tehhome) (abyss) to be hoary (covered with frost)" (Job41:31-32).
"For thus saith the Lord God: When I shall make thee (Tyre) [Earth during the 1000 years] a desolate city, like the cities that are not inhabited; when I shall bring up the deep (tehhome)(abyss)(Bottomless Pit) upon thee, and great waters shall cover thee; When I shall bring thee down with them that descend into the pit, with the people of old, and shall set thee in the low parts of the earth, in places desolate of old, with them that go down to the pit, that thou be not inhabited; and I shall set glory in the land of the living" (Ezk.26:19).
Satan and his Demons know Bible prophecy, and they know that earth, in its abyss condition, will be their prison/Bottomless Pit during the Millennium. The following bible verse portrays Jesus and His Disciples confronted by 2 demon-possessed men, and the demons reveal that they know their future imprisonment:
Demoniacs Confronting Jesus
"And they [demons] besought Him that He would not command them to go out into the (abussos) deep (abyss)(Bottomles Pit)" (Lk.8:31). They begged Jesus not to cast them into the Bottomless Pit. Matthew adds something that helps us identify the "Deep." "And, behold they (Demons) cried out, saying, what have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? Art thou come here to torment us before the time" (Matt.8:29)? What exactly was their request? "Please don’t torment us by casting us in a Bottomless Pit before our time!"
"The earth was without form (tohuw) and void (bohuw); and darkness was upon the face of the deep (abyss)" (Gen.1:2).
This is Creation Week, and we see these two expressions used; "Without Form and Void" and "The Abyss." If we look at all of the other places in Scripture where these expressions are used, Satan's Bottomless Pit will be all too clear. Jeremiah used tohuw and bohuw describing the future time when earth will have no sun, no humans, no birds, no vegetation, and all cities totally destroyed:
Jeremiah - "Tohuw and Bohuw"
"I beheld the earth and, lo, it was without form and void (tohuw and bohuw); and the heavens, and they had no light [no sun - planet frozen]. I beheld the mountains and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. I beheld and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. I beheld and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all its cities were broken down at (by) the presence of the Lord, and by His fierce anger" (Jer.4:23-26).
A quick side note here. There's some confusion about what happens when Jesus comes. Some teach that when He comes, He will point to this Earth in shambles, and declare, "Come ye blessed of My Father, inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." The Bible says God sends 7 plagues for the specific purpose of preparing earth for the Devil and his angels (See 2Pet.3:7)! Jesus said He is in Heaven now, preparing it specifically for His Redeemed people (See Jn.14:1-3)!
When Will Earth be Bottomless Pit?
Isaiah told us when all this massive destruction will happen. "The day of the Lord’s vengeance" (Vs.8). The "Day of the Lord" begins at Jesus' Second Coming, thus. Isaiah saw "its (the whole earth’s) smoke go up for ever (for ages); from generation to generation it (earth) shall lie waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever (for ages and ages)." From generation to generation, and ages and ages is much longer than 7 years. Pre-Trib says the Tribulation will be 7 years. A simple reading of Isaiah 34:8-10 makes it clear that neither 7 years or forever with no end will fit in the context.
Isaiah and John - Same Vision
Isaiah saw, "The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom like the rose" (Isa.35:1). "and sorrow and sighing shall flee away" (Vs.10).
John saw, "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away. And He that sat on the throne said, behold I make all things new" (Rev.21:4-5).
John Saw, "And I saw a New Heaven and a New Earth (Rev.21:1). This Paradise promised—this "making all things new," happens at the end of the Millennium, not the beginning.
In Isaiah 34, Isaiah mentions several animals when he describes earth during the Millennium. It turns out that these doleful creatures are not animals at all! A careful study shows the creatures will actually be Demons! See Animal/Demons in the Millennium .
Satan's Bottomless Pit in the Millennium
"Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth. And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit, and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare; for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fall and not rise again. And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of high ones that are on high [Satan and his demons], and the kings of the earth upon the earth. And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days [John says 1000 years] shall they be visited. Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun shall be ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in Mount Zion [Heaven], and in Jerusalem [New Jerusalem], and before His ancients gloriously". Notice [1000 years] inserted in the phrase, "After many days shall they be visited" (Isa.24:17-23). Isaiah didn’t say how long the "many days" would last, but John told exactly. He said Satan would spend a 1000 years in his pit. The Septuagint translates that phrase, "After many generations shall they be visited."
Satan's Pit a "Stinking Dungeon"
Isaiah says, "as prisoners are gathered in the pit." This "pit" in the Hebrew is "bowr," meaning "stinking dungeon." Billions of bodies all over the ground and stacked in demolished cities makes earth a stinking dungeon. Several other prophecies use "pit" (bowr) describing earth's abyss state (See Isa.14:15; Ezk.31:14,16;32:23).
"Dragon, Serpent, Devil, and Satan"
"He laid hold on the Dragon, that old Serpent, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him a thousand years" (Rev.20:1-2). John said, "Dragon, Serpent, Devil, and Satan." Let’s look at more "wild beasts" representing Satan and his demons. The following text in the Septuagint translates the creatures as, Devils, Satyrs, and Monsters.
"And the wild beasts (devils) of the islands shall cry in their desolate houses, and the dragons (Satyrs;demons) in their pleasant palaces; and her (Babylon’s) time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged" (Isa.13:22). John speaks often of Babylon, and always he means Antichrist's last-day church (Rev.14:8; 16:19; 17:5; 18:2,10,21).
"Piercing Crooked Serpent"
"For, behold, the Lord cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity; the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain. In that day the Lord with His sore and great and strong sword shall punish Leviathan (Satan), the piercing serpent, even Leviathan, that crooked serpent; and He shall slay the dragon that is in the sea" (Isa.26:21-27:1).
Does God have a quarrel with snakes and sea creatures? Isaiah listed several names for Satan. John called Satan, "The great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan" (Rev.12:9).
Isaiah continually tells more and more about earth during the 1000 years.
"The Day of the Lord’s Vengeance"
"For the indignation of the Lord is upon all nations, and His fury upon all their armies; He hath utterly destroyed them, and He hath delivered them to the slaughter. Their slain also shall be cast out, and their stink shall come up out of their carcasses, and the mountains shall be melted with their blood. And all the hosts of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together like a scroll; and all their hosts shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and like a falling fig from the fig tree" (Isa.34:2-4).
"For it is the Day of the Lord’s vengeance, and the year of recompences for the controversy of Zion. And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into brimstone, and the land thereof into burning pitch. And it shall not be quenched night nor day; its smoke shall go up forever (for ages); from generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it (for ages and ages) forever and ever" (Vss.8-10). "The wild beasts (devils; Septuagint) of the desert shall also meet with the wild beasts (devils) of the island, and the satyr (demons) shall call to his fellow" (Vs.14).
Satan and demons are calling to each other in their Bottomless Pit.
"Gog and Magog"
Satan's Army, "the number of whom is as the sands of the sea," is actually all of the Unsaved Wicked who've died since Jesus created earth. See Gog and Magog. Satan ends his glorious reign in his Bottomless Pit because God raises all of the wicked dead since creation, and Satan gathers them and assembles them around New Jerusalem telling them they can overtake it. But instead of a battle, the unsaved find themselves standing before the Great White Throne Judgment. After Judgment, fire comes down from God out of heaven and devoured them (Rev.20:9). Ezekiel was shown how God will one day kill Satan (See Ezk.28:8-10)! Isaiah describes how Jesus purifies earth with fire, then creates Paradise on top of the very place Satan and his "dragons" had wandered and cried for a 1000 years:
Ashes on Top of Dragons
"And the parched ground shall become a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water; in the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall be grass with reeds and rushes"(Isa.35:7).
"The desert shall rejoice and blossom like a rose" (Isa.35:1). "They shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away" (Vs.10).
